THE PASQUE FLOWER
The Pasque is the state flower of South Dakota. It represents our project for many reasons:
like us, it is native to the Dakota prairies;
like our communities, the flower thrives in even the harshest environments, blooming after frigid, blizzard-filled winters;
like SD activists, the Pasque flower may be small and hard to see from a distance, but if you look for it closely, you can find it everywhere in our state;
and most importantly – the Pasque flower is beautiful, but if you try to eat it, it will poison you. Our communities are also gorgeous and fierce.
ONGOING PROJECTS
Reproductive Justice Through Coalition Building
We are bringing reproductive justice leaders in South Dakota together to build trust and positive relationships. We aim to identify shared values and alignment. We hope to build a collective vision for the future with achievable goals, rooted in community priorities and reproductive justice.
Reproductive Justice Through Community-Based Research
Between August 2023 and March 2024, 27 immigrant women and community leaders in South Dakota were interviewed in Spanish, Nepali, Amharic, and English to gather insights on reproductive health. The findings highlight the urgent need for inclusive, community-led strategies that address systemic inequities and improve healthcare access for immigrant communities.
Reproductive Justice Through Art
We created an art exhibit focused on reproductive justice. We collected art and showcased it across the state and online. This art exhibit has served as a way to talk about abortion and reproductive justice in an area where it is often considered taboo. PAST PROJECTS
Reproductive Justice By You
RJ By You microgrants supported community activists in South Dakota and Missouri. The RJ BY You team funded $35,000 in microgrants and mentored activists carrying out impactful Reproductive Justice projects.
Reproductive Justice Through Communications Campaign
In collaboration with Justice Through Empowerment Network (JEN), SD Healthy Families, and SD Faith in Public Life, we completed a $100k communications campaign We created abortioninsd.org, a hotspot where people can find information on abortion for South Dakotans as well as billboards, social media and radio ads, stickers, shirts, and totebags.
Reproductive Justice Through Religious Leaders
With South Dakota Faith in Public Life, we surveyed over 1,400 congregations. Many have since signed onto a public statement supporting reproductive rights.
SD Reproductive Justice Coalition
Purpose Statement: We will bring reproductive justice leaders in SD together to build trust and positive relationships. We aim to identify shared values and alignment. We hope to build a collective vision for the future with achievable goals, rooted in community priorities and reproductive justice.
